What is a Massage Like?

Massage techniques can release muscle tension, improve circulation, increase flexibility, reduce fatigue and combat stress.  But, “What will a massage actually be like?”

You will relax on a padded table with cushions and face rests for support.  Your body will be draped with sheets.  The room is warm and quiet with soft music setting a relaxing mood.  The therapist massages your body with a firm touch using oils and lotions.  After a session, most people are very relaxed and may be relieved of aches and pains that have built up over time.  Often, people get an energy boost that can last for several days.

Massage Therapy and Chiropractic Care

These holistic therapies share the goal of your over all well-being.  Both are hands on, drug free techniques and can be used as preventative and restorative therapies.  They work to help deal with the cause of pain and not just treat symptoms of pain. Used in combination, they can help maintain your optimum health.

Therapeutic Massage

Massage therapy can reduce pain and, when used with other health care, can help heal and help prevent the return of certain conditions.  In some cases, massage can reduce the need for medication and sugary.  Massage reduces stress, which can give you more energy and helps reduce the likelihood of injury and illness. Massage can help with injuries such as tendonitis, ligament sprains and muscle strains and increases circulation, which reduces inflammation and brings nutrition to injured cells.  Certain techniques, such as Deep Transverse Friction, limit scar formation in new injuries and make a more functional scar in old injuries.

Sports Massage

Many sports and fitness enthusiasts rely on regular massage as an important part of their health maintenance routine.  Chronic tension in muscles can decrease performance and lead to injuries.  Neuromuscular stretching and other massage techniques lessen chronic tension and relieve new areas of tension before they become chronic. Your massage therapist can teach you ways you can stretch before and after participating in any strenuous activities.

TMJ Disorder (TMJD)

The most common form of TMJD is discomfort in the muscles and their connective tissue coverings of the jaw, neck and shoulders, known as myofascial pain.  Your therapist may use several techniques such as ice massage, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapies, and intra-oral massage directly aimed at the muscles controlling the TemporalMandibular Joint and the muscles attached to the articulating disc in the joint. Massage will increase circulation, soften fascia, cleanse the tissues and improve nutrition to the cells.

Massage for Headaches

Massage can reduce headaches by releasing tight, shortened muscles, trigger points, and connective tissue surrounding muscles and other structures (fascia) in the neck and head.

When muscles and fascia relax, pressure lessens and pain decreases.

Arthritis and Massage Therapy

Massage has been shown to increase circulation, cleanse tissues, reduce arthritic inflammation and increase nutrition to muscles and joints.  Swelling can decrease as fluids are pushed into the circulatory system.  Increased joint mobility and reduced pain are just a couple of the benefits enjoyed by regular massage.
